taping this so we can be at home with our families too. a live check of all the morning's top stories. thanks, sam. good morning, everyone, happy new year. i'm linsey davis. breaking news overnight from capital hill. working into the wee hours of the morning lawmakers in the senate have reached an agreement to reverse the fiscal cliff. abc's jonathan karl reports on the details from washington. >> reporter: at long last, they finally have a deal. late last night, vice president biden went to capitol hill to convince senate democrats to pass it. >> i think we'll get a very good vote tonight, but happy new year. >> reporter: after a quick debate, the senate even passed it. >> the bill as amended is passed. >> reporter: now the big question, can it pass in the house? technically everybody's taxes have already gone up. the tax cuts have expired. but if the bill can pass in the house in the next day or two, the tax cuts can be made

retroactive. the bill, if it passes, would extend tax cuts for all workers earning under $400,000. it would prevent a big tax hike estates values at less than $5 million and it would extend unemployment benefits set to expire today for some 2 million people. even as they closed in on that deal yesterday, congressional republicans were not happy with what they heard from president obama who held a campaign-style event at the white house. >> i'm going to be president for the next four years, i think. >> reporter: effectively continuing the partisans' bickering we've long seen. >> time to stop the cheerleading and campaigning. >> i know the president enjoys heckling and having pep rallies to get congress to act instead of sitting down and negotiating. >> reporter: now the big new year's test, can it pass in the house? for "good morning america," jonathan karl, abc news, washington. president obama says the agreement reached by the senate is the, quote, right thing to do for our country and is

encouraging the house to pass it without delay. secretary of state hillary clinton is spending this new year's day in a new york hospital where she is being treated for a blood clot near her brain. doctors are using blood thinners to try to break up the clot which was found more than two weeks after clinton fainted and suffered a concussion. while the clot could have been serious, even fatal, doctors say she's expected to make a full recovery. in california, a big new year's eve fireworks show in sacramento was called off at the last minute because of a deadly shooting. two people were killed and three others injured in a gunfight outside a restaurant and police decided to call off the nearby celebration that was expected to draw 40,000 people. but here in new york city, the big apple, things were peaceful as more than a million people packed times square for the biggest new year's eve celebration of all. with party hats, 2013 glasses and a blizzard of confetti, the crowd counted down the end of

2012 as the famous crystal ball dropped at midnight but after waiting for hours the partyers seemed to be gone in just minutes leaving city workers to clean up and clear the streets of one ton of confetti. one ton of confetti. many of the scraps of paper carried hopes and wishes people had written down for the new year. dozens of same-sex couples in maryland rang in the new year by walking down the aisle. at midnight gay marriage became legal in the state after voters approved it last november. gay marriage is now the law in nine states and the district of columbia. taking a look now at your new year's day weather forecast, thunderstorms from houston to new orleans and atlanta. it's a windy day in the northeast. snow in possible in columbus, ohio and charleston, west virginia. the coldest air of the season hits chicago, denver and omaha. seattle and portland are in the upper 30s. that's the national forecast.

a chilly start to the rose parade in pasadena. in the low 40s. crews have been making last-minute fixes to the floats all night after they were towed into position last night. spectators have also been waiting all night for the parade to start. hundreds of thousands of people are expected. and finally, among those in pasadena will be our friend espn's hannah storm will be hosting abc's coverage of the rose parade. it marks a return to air after she was seriously burned at home three weeks ago. hannah was using a propane gas

grill outside her home when it exploded. you can see the parade with hannah and josh this morning at 11:00 eastern. that's the news. now back to amy. >> so what does the new year have in store for you and your wallet and where should you be investing to maximize your money in 2013? here to get you a fresh start in the new year is personal finance expert farnoosh tharabi. happy new year. >> happy new year to you. >> not necessarily for a lot facing the "d" word deeply in debt. what advice do you have. >> attack it sooner rather than later. this time last year they were still dealing with credit card hangover. hoping we'll be able to rerace this by february, march. to do it pay more than the minimum, three or four types it and if you need help get help. there's a lot of good systems out there. debt management program like the national foundation for credit

counseling, they will look over your budget. they will be your advocate to get you out of debt slowly by surely. >> also the time of year where people think about buying a home. interest rates are low but real estate prices are expected to keep climbing throughout the year. what do you think people should consider when they're looking to buy. >> okay, so you want to have all your financial ducks in a row. it's tempting to jump in because we're seeing interest rates slow and then there's the expectation that they will rise by the later part of this year. so people say we have to act fast but you really want to make sure you have a steady job, that you have a good credit score to capitalize on interest rates and when you're buying the home, it's not a knee-jerk reaction to a headline. it's that you want to stay in the home for five years or ten years so really be prudent before jumping in. >> all right, also the start of the year, millions of workers are now picking out their benefit choices for 2013. it's a very confusing time so they're deciding how much salary to put into health care flexible spending plans and what's your advice? >> so first know the rules and

the new rule is your flex spending account, these fsas which are tax-friendly accounts, put aside money to pay for out-of-pocket expenses like co-pays and deductions that will be limited to $2500 per person per year. so if you and your spouse are -- have access to fsas, both should tap into these and use the accounts. we often find people have some money left over and that money goes right back to your employer so make sure you're taking advantage of your fsas. >> what about changes in retirement accounts? >> this is a silver lining. i.r.a.s and 401(k)s, the government is increasing taxable contributions every year so for i.r.a.s, it was $5,000, now it's $5500 per year and for 401(k)s, it's jumping 3% to $17,500 per year. the advice here you want to do as much as you can. we know the story that people are not planning well enough for retirement so take advantage. it's a tax deduction. >> speaking of planning how about money-saving tips?

we could use those. >> my biggest tip for anyone trying to erase debt, save more is to stick with cash. credit cards are very convenient. but cash limits you physically and also psychologically. when you pay with cash at the restaurant or at the department store -- >> it hurts more. >> it hurts and that's a good thing if you're trying to get into that behavior of sticking to a budget and i'm getting out of debt. >> words of wisdom, farnoosh torabi, happy new year. >> you too. >> words of wisdom indeed. so many of us meanwhile, make the resolutions of this new year to get healthy. now in our january jump-start we're kicking off 2013 with tips to make this your best year and dr. jennifer ashton is here. top five or six or four ways to get and stay healthy. sit on down there. before we get to your top five -- >> happy new year. >> let's be honest. we were perhaps partaking some of us out there just waking up to the program. >> right. >> but we want to get them up

and going on this january 1st. how best to battle -- >> you're talking about the hangover a little bit. we're not really sure what causes those dreaded physical symptoms of a hangover but the leading contender is dehydration now, little math for us at this hour of the morning. you consume four alcoholic beverages, which we probably did just right here at this table. that can result in the elimination of up to one liter of water so the dehydration is key. if possible you want to rehydrate as you're drinking if you didn't do that last night, it's not too early now. drink that water and if you need something for the headache, reach for eye ibuprofen, not acetaminophen. >> why did hair of the dog worked. >> hair of the dog is a myth. greasy foods is also. stay with bland stuff. >> it always works. >> sorry, amy. >> the old tips don't work like having another beverage, hair of the dog, that -- >> probably not. probably not. >> well, if we're not getting hair of the dog in the mouth,

though, focus -- there are certain places we should be focusing. >> in 2013 we'll be hearing a lot about oral health. the cdc designated as a major focus for health moving forward this year and in the future, we're talking about everything from just keeping your teeth white to periodontal disease. now, recent studies show one out of every two adult americans over the age of 30 has periodontal disease, full disclosure, i have it. >> it affects your heart. >> it can affect your entire body. you want to see your dentist, not just once a years, two or three -- >> is there a -- >> the key is seeing your dentist before it becomes severe, once a year to the dentist, probably not enough. two or three times. >> all promising we're hitting the gym today or maybe tomorrow but we have one tip. looking for one tip for exercise. >> you know the number one reason people don't work out is time. you don't have to cram it all into one sitting but spread it out during the day. the best exercise walking,

abc's ron claiborne has this incredible story. >> reporter: in the storm ravaged town of long beach, long island, on the day after hurricane sandy, we met barbara burns standing on the front porch of the house she called home for the past 48 years, the house had five feet of floodwater in it and, worse, 100 gallons of home heating oil stored in her garage had spilled into the water. she wanted to go to a shelter but her family had no way to go anywhere. almost every car in town had been damaged by the flood. she, her daughter maureen, her two grandchildren and mccleary, the family dog, all squeezed in with a few possessions they could grab in a hurry. producer john s achlsantucci dr them to city hall where they caught a bus to the sheller. that's the last time we saw them until a few days ago when we met mrs. burn and maureen again at their little house on connecticut avenue. >> i really feel like you and

john saved our lives that day and we have been through so much stuff, it was really a horrible, horrible night. >> reporter: like so many others in long beach, they still cannot return home. >> this is like a studio apartment. >> reporter: all this is under water. >> yeah. >> reporter: how is it when you come back and visit the house? >> depressing. >> reporter: depressing? >> very depressing, yes. >> reporter: what is the situation with the house? is it going to be okay? >> we don't know. >> we don't know. you don't know whether you're coming or going. everything is up in the air. you're just -- you are just not thinking clearly and that's the bottom line right now. >> reporter: and they told us about that terrifying night when they huddled together in their darkened home as the wind howled and the water rose. >> i didn't know if we were going to live through it, and the water just kept rising. when the sun came up and the water had receded, i was so grateful that we were alive and that we made it through. >> reporter: this is a tough

resilient family. they say 2013 will be a better year. >> do you want to come back here? >> this is my home. i love long beach. i do want to come back. >> i think that long beach is going to shine even brighter than it was. >> reporter: in the new year, huh? >> yeah, the spirit of long beach is really what makes this town what this town is. it's not the houses, it's not the buildings, it's the spirit of the people. >> reporter: for "good morning america," ron claiborne, abc news, long beach, new york. an amazing story that reminds us even in the worst of times it's people that can actually make a difference. >> and those -- just images of people helping one another, it was obviously a horrible thing to happen in any community but to see everyone come together like that, it gives you a real sense of community. >> yeah, also, it's important to note, how many of those stories there are out there. >> i know. >> how many people lost their homes, lost everything they thought mattered and hopefully will have families such as that one to help them come back together and bring places like

long beach back even stronger and here's to that idea. all right, we'll continue now. talk about a holiday bonus. the owner of a group of grocery stores in the midwest is handing over the keys to his entire business to all 400 of his employees making all of them part owners of the business. so why is joe liukin turning over the reins instead of selling? take a look. ♪ auld lang syne >> reporter: in "it's a wonderful life," a small town businessman with the biggest heart in all of bedford falls. the bedford falls of the midwest could be bemidge ji, minnesota and their george bailey has to be joe liukin. >> finding everything. >> yes. >> reporter: joe owns a group of grocery stores in minnesota and had north dakota and has been the boss for 46 years. >> right here. >> reporter: also the hardest worker making sure that every

item is in place, sharing many laughs along the way. and while age and parkinson's have barely slowed him down at 71 joe finally decided he was ready to retire. but what to do with all his stores? joe turned to his four sons but none of them live in the area anymore. >> he looked at me and said i have a great idea, let the employees own the business. >> reporter: esop, he's handing over his business to all 400 of his employees for free. >> with no doubt i could have earned more money but the employees have it it's a win/win situation for everybody. >> reporter: it was his way of giving back to his workers. he credits them for his company's huge success over the years. >> for him to do a gift like that, i got good bumps. >> rocking awesome. >> quite a few wows. >> walking down the aisle, we've been blessed in every possible

way. it's a gift to be able to share that now. >> reporter: but early on times were tough. >> we have two babies and we were getting tired of running out of money a week before paychecks came in. >> reporter: his hard work and drive paid off and his mom and pop shop grew into a mini empire. these days joe still gets in his car before dawn to get to work by 4:00 a.m. every morning. >> there's one joe lueken in the world. i could never replicate what he has done. >> reporter: brent started as an overnight janitor. now he's about to get the keys to joe's king dom. >> we want to keep doing what joe did. >> it's up to us to make the company stronger than it was. we have big shoes to fill. >> i didn't do this. the girls did this. >> reporter: while joe takes his final b ochows as the boss, one thing is for certain, the new owners will always welcome joe back. >> i think that is the perfect

the fiscal cliff. the senate voted overnight approving a deal to head off tax increases on the middle class. under the agreement taxes would go up only on those making more than $400,000. the deal now goes to the house where a vote is expected today. doctors in new york are giving new details about the condition of secretary of state hillary clinton. she's in the hospital being treated for a blood clot that formed near her brain. she's expected to make a full recovery. icy conditions were a new year's eve hazard for air passengers in kansas city. planes had to be de-iced during a snowstorm at the airport. its forecast to remain cold through the week and drivers are being warned about the dangers of black ice this morning. there will be storms and flooding along the gulf coast and into the carolinas today and very cold temperatures remain in the nation's midsection. that's the national forecast. now here's the weather where you are.

becky, let's talk about what's coming down the pike in the world of technology. >> apple, that's what everybody kind of wants to think about. new iphone. is it going to be the most exciting thing? no. sorry, not expecting a big, new iphone release. not expecting a huge innovation in the ipad. the one rumor that won't die from apple is the full-screen apple tv like the big screen hdtv with base time baked right in, itunes, that may happen. because we're not expecting a big ipad release that creates a space for the android tablets, for the kindle fire or maybe the windows hybrid laptop tablet. >> google is doing something too, right? >> we expect them to really bring their tablets to the forefront because this is the window of opportunity for them. now, the other thing that we expect to see and this is sort of a nuts and bolts thing, is health and technology really melding more this year. >> good. >> so we'll have more gadgets

that track all our steps we take every day, our calories we burn and then it gets medical in terms of your blood pressure or glucose and that's all going to be quantified on the internet. >> that's really terrific. do you think if this apple tv happens that it's going to be worth it? we always look to you to let us know whether or not we should go for it. >> i don't think it's going to be such an innovation in the technology but the ecosystem. is it easier to use? will it help me to get my media where i want to watch it? i think apple is probably going to be a little better at that than some of the others. >> of all the gadgets anything we should save our pennies for in 2013. >> the fun stuff. i want to tell you the beatz by dre, this whole concept. what do you think, fashionable, right? >> absolutely. >> this is not going away. this is a trend -- i can take these off now, right? >> yeah. >> this is a trend for the kids nowadays, world, you're too much. i want to go into my own little space. now i also want to talk about gaming because we saw the uii u

come out. is it going to be the xbox 720 that comes out? cars, many people buy their car based on how the cup holder works, that they really like it. >> that is important, honestly. >> how does it work with my phone now? is it a tablet on the screen? will it play my music? we'll see that happening as cars evolve. >> eyes on the roads, people. chris connelly, let's talk about tv. tv, movies, you go first. you tell me what you want me to know about 2013. we saw some good ones in '12. where are we heading. >> movies first, "the lone ranger" coming out in july. we got some entertainment on the way. any time johnny depp can float his i had sin contractic self on top of a story, jerry bruckheimer knows how to rock it. he plays tonto and they should have a lot of fun. this had to happen "the heat" coming in april. this is sandra bullock as a

straight-laced fbi agent. melissa mccarthy as a boston cop. it's like "rizzoli and and islest on a whole bunch of jell-o shots from the director of "bridesmaids." >> it's funny. >> how could it not be for april. "world war z" as brad pitt takes on a zombie apocalypse, how much fun could that be? this is a somewhat fraught production, they've had to work on the end of the movie a fair amount. a lot who loved the original novel are objecting to the change but could be exciting. brad sees this as a possibly socially conscious film along with being a huge action extravaganza. >> how so? his thought? >> he feels like it's a way to look at all the problems in society. like a trojan horse, he says, to discuss everything that's wrong so big action, social conscience, brad saving his family. >> ah. >> we'll see how it all works out. >> in tv? >> a lot going.

"downton abbey" coming up, it backed into being a series, a miniseries first. now here we already are in season three, people are jacked for that and later in the month something a little unusual. a prequel to "sex and the city" called "the carrie diaries," carrie back in high school in 1984. crazy too >> that's getting some good buzz. >> replace "gossip girl." which gets me to fashion, nice segue. "elle" magazine's joe z, you are the man i rely on what not to wear. what to wear in 2013. >> okay, these are the great trends i saw on the runway but the great thing they'll translate across the board at every price range and really to successful in every possible place. so the biggest thing we saw, we did see a lot of color blocking

in previous seasons, black and white. black and white >> we have been hearing a lot about black and white. >> back to the basics. as much as we're in a new year us fashion people love to look back and we've had the '80s and '70s, '60s was a big decade for us. >> '60s inspired. black and white. what's another look we need to have. >> again, looking to the back -- this is the 20-year itch. we wait 20 years and eventually everything comes back into style. >> why i hate to throw things away. you have to hold on to it 20 years, grunge is making a return to fashion. so but this is what we call new grunge. it's not quite as dirty. not quite kurt cobain, a bit more polished than that but it's about the courtney love redone a little bit more loose, a bit more comfortable. a flat shoe. we're seeing a flat shoe again so all of these looks are really accessible in a different way. >> you let out a huge sigh. >> happy to hear about it. >> flats are in. one more trend and i just think this is beautiful.

now a look live at the morning's top headlines. here it is. thanks, josh. good morning, everyone and happy new year. i'm linsey davis. breaking news overnight from capitol hill. senators waiting until after the fiscal cliff deadline passed at midnight before they finally approved an agreement. the deal would raise taxes only on wealthy americans and would put off any spending cuts for two months. the agreement now goes to the house where passage is not certain. secretary of state hillary clinton will be spending this holiday in a new york hospital. her third day there after doctors discovered a blood clot near her brain. abc's martha raddatz has the latest on her serious health scare. >> reporter: this morning the normally globe-trotting secretary of state remains in a hospital room. monitoring closely being given blood thinners to break up the clot in her head. family members including

daughter chelsea close at her side. a statement from her doctors new year's eve saying the scan revealed a clot in the vein that is situated in the space between the brain and the skull behind the right here ♪ the statement says the secretary did not suffer a stroke or any neurological damage but this is clearly a serious setback. >> the goal there is to try and dissolve that clot. she'll likely be on that kind of treatment for three to six months. >> reporter: it was december 7th when the secretary was last seen in public during an overseas diplomatic tour where she picked up a bad stomach virus. days later, still ill, the secretary fainted at her home and got that nasty concussion. clinton has had a blood clot in the past. in 1998, behind her right knee, after a year of heavy travel. this clot comes at the end of the most demanding period of her life as she recently told abc's barbara walters. >> are you exhausted? >> i am.

>> the bill as amended is passed. >> reporter: now the big question, can it pass in the house? technically, everybody's taxes have already gone up. the tax cuts have expired. but if the bill can pass in the house in the next day or two, the tax cuts can be made retroactive. the bill, if it passes, would extend tax cuts for all workers earning under $400,000. it would prevent a big tax hike on estates valued at less than $5 million and it would extend unemployment benefits set to expire today for some 2 million people. even as they closed in on that deal yesterday, congressional republicans were not happy with what they heard from president obama who held a campaign-style event at the white house. >> i'm going to be president for the next four years, i think. >> reporter: effectively continuing the partisan bickering we've long seen. >> it's time to stop the cheerleading. it's time to stop the campaigning. >> i know the president enjoys heckling and having pep rallies to try to get congress to act instead of sitting down and
